I’ve had the benefit of working with many wonderful colleagues — peers, supervisors and team members — and I’m often asked the same thing: “How are you always so calm?”

I’ll tell you a secret: I’m not always calm. Sometimes I’m anxious, nervous, angry or down-right scared. I have burned out. And I was determined not to go through that again, so I learned about and practiced balance.

Taking a balanced approach to life (not “work/life balance” — it’s all life!) is not rocket science. But it is a learned behaviour and takes practice. 
 

  • Tip 1: Breathe

    That’s it. That’s the tip! Breathe.

    We take about 22,000 breaths per day. Most of these are very shallow, at the top of our chest. The benefits of deep breathing are well known: it helps manage stress, reduces anxiety, grows lung capacity, lowers blood pressure and heart rate and helps you sleep.

    “But I don’t have time for breath work,” you say.

    We take 22,000 breaths per day. Give me three.

    Inhale. Breathe in through your nose for 5 (slow) counts. Hold for 5. Exhale for 5 (slower) counts.

    Repeat.

    Repeat.

    There, you did it!

    Stuck in traffic? Breathe.
    Taking the elevator to a meeting? Breathe.
    Waiting for your computer to reboot? Breathe.

    The American Lung Association’s tagline is: “When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.” So just do it. Breathe.
